Osteopathy is a system of manual medicine that diagnoses, treats and helps to prevent problems arising within the musculoskeletal system. This includes assessing and treating faults in joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves anywhere in the body - not just in the back!
Osteopathy is not just about treating symptoms. Osteopaths are trained to seek out and treat the underlying cause of the pain and can thus also help to prevent future reoccurrences. The causes could be due to a recent injury, postural strains, stress or an underlying disease. We also help guide patients into a better self care regime by advising on lifestyle, diet and exercise.
Cranial osteopathy is a gentle, safe and effective approach of working so it's suitable for everyone including delicate people such as the elderly and babies. Specific gentle pressure is applied where necessary to enable the body to heal itself. Babies who have experienced forceps delivery, a long labour or caesarean birth often benefit from cranial work. Midwives are now recommending some new mothers to bring their babies for a check up shortly after the birth.
Cranial Osteopathy can be useful for all ages. In adults it is especially useful in treating migraine, sinus and dental problems or head traumas as well as a large range of muscular skeletal problems.
In Children it is often used for crying and irritability, colic and wind, sleep disturbances, recurrent ear infections and behavioural problems.
Medical acupuncture, also known as dry needling is often used as an adjunctive method of pain management alongside traditional osteopathic techniques.
Medical acupuncture involves the insertion of needles into specific trigger points commonly associated with acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain.
Only single-use sterile acupuncture needles are used and only with the patients consent.
Conditons which respond well to medical acupuncture include injuries such as tennis elbow and arthritis.
